Origin of the Name Tracey
The origin of the name
Tracey was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of the name Treacy include Tracey, O'Tracy, Tracy and Treacey. This name is ultimately of Norman origin and is derived from the name Traci, taken from a place in France. The English town of Bovey Tracy derives its name from these families. In Ireland the name Treacy and its variants is derived from a number of Gaelic septs that were located in Counties Galway and Laoise. In Gaelic the name is O'Treasaign which is taken from the word 'treasagh' meaning 'warlike'.
A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. Irish septs and clans that are related often belong to even larger groups, sometimes called tribes.
In Modern times the name is widespread in Ireland and is still well represented in the Galway area.
The Tracey coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Tracey descendants.
