Origin of the Name Tinney

The Tinney family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. "the maker of gloves or wearer of gloves". It is taken from the Middle English"cuffe" meaning "glove". The name is first found in 14th century records in England but also in ireland where it is anglised from the Gaelic "MacDhuibh" meaning "son of the black one". It has also links to the name Dornan in this country.
The Tinney coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Tinney descendants.
