Origin of the Name Mehaffey
The origin of the name
Mehaffey was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of Mehaffey include McFee, McFie, McDuffie, McPhee, McPhie, MacAfee and McHaffy. This name in Gaelic is MacDhuibhshithe and the latter variants are the anglicized forms of this. This is one of the oldest Gaelic personal names in existence, going back to the year 1164. The island of Colonsay was the home of the Clan, where a MacDuffie was hereditary keeper of the records of the Lord of the Isles. Later they spread to Lochaber and were followers of Cameron of Locheil and the Islay MacDonalds. There are a number of MacDuffie Tombs on Oronsay but members of the Clan are now found all over the World. A branch of the family moved to Ulster where the variants MacAfee, Mahaffy, and McHaffy are numerous. We find it first occurs in this Province in the year 1664, in the County Armagh Hearth Money Rolls.
The Mehaffey coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Mehaffey descendants.
