Origin of the Name MacHale

The origin of the name MacHale was found in the archives. This Irish name is associated with County Mayo and this sept, Mac Ceile, were erenaghs of Killala. This surname was also adopted by a Welsh family which settled in the barony of Tirawley, County Mayo, in the 13th century, and derives its name from Howell. Being located in the same County the descendants of these cannot now be distinguished from their namesakes of Gaelic origin. By inter-marriages the descendants of both lines are all of one Irish bloodline today. An outstanding person of the name was the protagonist of 'Irish Ireland ', John McHale, 1791-1881, who was for forty seven years Archbishop of Tuam.
The MacHale coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all MacHale descendants.
