Origin of the Name Hanvey
The Hanvey family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of the name Irish Hanvey include Hanvy and O'Hanvey. These names are derived from the Gaelic o'hAinbhith sept that was located in Counties Down and Armagh. This sept name is taken from the Gaelic word 'ainbhioth' which translates as 'storm'.
A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. Irish septs and clans that are related often belong to even larger groups, sometimes called tribes.
Smaller septs of the name were located in Counties Meath and in the western part of County Cork in the very south of the country. In modern times the majority of descendants bearing the name Hanvey are still to be found in Ulster Province.
The Hanvey coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.
