Origin of the Name Giles
The
Giles family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Giles is a mediaeval name of which the original form was Egidius. Variants of this name include Gile, Gyles, Jiles and Jellis. The name was borne by a seventh century Hermit whose cult popularized the name in a variety of forms including Gidi and Gile, which was then introduced to England by the Normans. This name is usually of Anglo-Norman descent spreading to the Celtic countries of Ireland , Scotland and Wales in early times and is found in many ancient manuscripts throughout these countries. In Ireland the names Gilles and Giles have long been associated with the town of Youghal in County Cork . In County Louth these are anglicized forms of the native Gaelic O'Glaisne sept. In Ulster this name and its variants were introduced by settlers who arrived from England and Scotland , especially during the seventeenth century.
The Giles coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Giles descendants.
