Origin of the Name Fitzmaurice
The origin of the name Fitzmaurice was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The name Fitzmaurice in Ireland is of Norman origin with families of the name being a branch of the Geraldines who were Lords of Liznaw in County Kerry . The invasion by the Anglo-Normans took place in the year 1170 and was led by the famous Strongbow. Many families of this origin later became completely integrated into Gaelic society. Families of Fitzmaurice were renowned for their resistance to English invaders during the sixteenth century. It is possible that some families may have shortened their original name to Maurice or Morris especially in County Kerry where the Gaelic form of the name is MacMuiris. Some County Mayo families of another Norman family, the Prendergasts, also changed their name to Fitzmaurice.
The Fitzmaurice coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Fitzmaurice descendants.
