Origin of the Name Dwyer

The Dwyer family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of Dwyer include O'Dwyer. In Ireland the O'Dwyers were a powerful Sept in County Tipperary, their lands being the mountainous area lying between the town of Thurles and County Limerick . They gave staunch resistance to the English through mediaeval and modern times. For five years, Michael Dwyer, 1771-1825, defied the English and was transported to Australia in the year 1803, where he became a policeman. In modern times, the Reverend Edward O'Dwyer, 1842-1917, Bishop of Limerick , endeared himself to the people of Ireland by his stand on behalf of Sinn Fein and the men of 1916.
The Dwyer coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Dwyer descendants.
