Origin of the Name Cullinane

The ancient history of the name Cullinane was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The Gaelic name O'Cuileannain is often anglicized as Cullinan in County Clare and as Cullinane in County Cork and in East Munster. The prefix O is seldom found with Cullinan or Cullinane in modern times. One important sept originated in Donegal, but there the name has most often been changed to Cullen. Up to the end of the seventeenth century bearers of the name were still using the form O'Cullinan. The Civil survey and the 1659 census indicate that the name was very numerous in County Cork in the seventeenth century not only in Barryroe but also in the surrounding baronies. Two bearers of the name from Kinsalea were among the Irish who sailed for Spain after the Battle of Kinsale. At that time, as today, branches of the sept were well established in County Clare and in County Waterford.
