Origin of the Name Cullen
The origin of the name Cullen was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of Cullen include Cullin. Meaning 'handsome one', this Irish sept originated in the South-Eastern Counties of Ireland . They possessed territory at Glencullen, County Wicklow, a place name from Cuileanne meaning 'Holly Tree', and also at Kilcullen in that same County. At that time they were a great power in that part of the land and have continued to dwell there uninterrupted to the present day. Several other septs have become Cullen also, namely, Culhoun of Leinster and MacCullen of Leitrim. Patrick O'Cullen was Bishop of Clougher, 1517-1542, and Paul Cullen was the renowned Archbishop of Dublin, 1803-1878.
The Cullen coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.
