In the sixteenth century there were several of the name to be found in Saint Andrews, the name also being found in Edinburgh, Dysart and Aberdeen in the seventeenth century. It occurs as a sept name of Clan MacKay and of Clan MacBain who settled in Invernessshire. Many instances are found in mediaeval records of the name and examples of such are a William Bayn who was tenant in Kethyk in 1467. A Martin Bayne held a tenement in Ayr in 1518. In Ireland this name is sometimes a synonym of the name White, taken from the Gaelic word 'ban' meaning white. Bayne is another variant.
