Origin of the Name Skelly
The Skelly family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The name Skelly is a form of the name Scally which in turn is derived from the Gaelic Mac Scalaidhe sept that was located in Counties Roscommon and Westmeath.
A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. Irish septs and clans that are related often belong to even larger groups, sometimes called tribes.
As Skelly the name is mostly found in Oriel, which encompasses the modern-day Counties of Armagh, Monaghan, Down and Louth. The variant form Miskelly is usually found in County Antrim. Some bearers of the name may be of the O'Scolaidhe sept of County Tipperary, who more often anglicized their name as Scully. This name is derived from a Gaelic word meaning 'student'.
The Skelly coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this.
