Origin of the Name Sheehy

The Sheehy family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The most important of their battles was the sacking of Kilmallock in 1591, when, with the MacSweeneys under James Fitzmaurice, it took three days to remove the treasures of the town. In the 1642 war in Limerick they were noted for their ferocity. A notable person of the name was John MacSheehy, 1745-1815, who was physician to the French Court. The Gaelic form of the name is MacSithigh, taken from the Gaelic word 'sitheach' meaning 'eerie'.
The Sheehy coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Sheehy descendants.
