Origin of the Name Rockett

The origin of the name Rockett was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The name Rockett can be of either Irish or French origin. When of Irish origin it is most associated with County Waterford with John Rocket being Mayor of that town in the year 1393. Rockets Castle is located near Carrick-on-Suir in nearby County Tipperary and was constructed by the Anglo-Normans in the year 1212. When Stongbow invaded in the late twelfth century dozens of originally French names became extant and were often further Anglicized and Gaelicized. When of French origin the name is of Huguenot descent being an Anglicized form of the name Rocquet, originally Rockell which in turn was originally 'de la Rochele'. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 French Huguenots fled religious persecution and settled in Ireland in the sixteenth century.
