Origin of the Name O'Regan
The O'Regan family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The Irish name O'Regan originated from several Gaelic Septs. The most important of these was O'Riagain of Counties Meath and Dublin , they being one of the four tribes of Tara, being very prominent in the wars against the Norse invaders. They were dispersed after the Anglo-Norman invasion and their descendants have largely disappeared except in County Leix, to which they migrated. The other Sept was Dalcassian in origin, and descends from Riagan, nephew of the famous Brian Boru. They were seated in the Limerick area of Thomond but in modern times they are found more so in County Cork . A notable member of the name was Maurice O'Regan who wrote a contemporary account of the Anglo-Norman invasion under Strongbow.
The O'Regan coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all O'Regan descendants.
