Origin of the Name Mohan
The ancient history of the name Mohan was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The Irish name Mohan is derived from the Gaelic O'Mochain sept that was located in Counties Galway and Sligo in he very west of the country. A sept or clan was a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. This name has been widely changed to Mahon, as well as Moan. In modern times the name is mostly found in County Monaghan. Mohan is also an occasional anglicized form of the name 'de Mohun' which is originally of Norman origin having been introduced into the country after the twelfth century invasion led by Strongbow.
The Mohan coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Mohan descendants.
