Origin of the Name MacKenna
The origin of the name MacKenna was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Meaning 'son of Cionaoid', this sept was seated in South Ulster , and were a branch of the Southern Ui Neill, their territory being Truagh in the Northern part of County Monaghan. In the seventeenth century a branch settled in Maghera in County Down. Most of the MacKennas of note hail from the literary field. Examples of such are a Niall MacKenna, 1710, who was a Gaelic poet and Harper, and Andrew MacKenna, 1833-1872, who was a leading editor and writer in Belfast. A most famous bearer of the name was Siobhan MacKenna, the Irish actress. This is one of the few old Gaelic names where the 'Mac' and 'O' have not been dropped.
The MacKenna coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all MacKenna descendants.
