This sept name literally translates as 'devotee of Saint John'. A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. Irish septs and clans that are related often belong to even larger groups, sometimes called tribes.
In Counties Fermanagh and Derry this Gaelic name has been anglicized as Monday, due to a misinterpretation of 'Giolla Eoin' as 'Luain' which is the Gaelic word for Monday. In modern times the name McGlone and its variants are still mostly found in their original homeland.
