Origin of the Name MacCullough
The origin of the name MacCullough was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of McCullough include McCullach, McCullagh, McCully, McCullie and McCoulie. This name means 'wild boar'. Malcolm Canmore dispatched Lulach, King of the Scots, who succeeded Macbeth. The MacCullochs owned considerable lands in the province of Ross and the MacCullochs in Argyllshire were associated with the Clan MacDougall. In Ireland this name is derived from the Gaelic MacCuUladh or MacConUladh Septs, which translates as 'hound of Ulster'. In County Donegal and County Tyrone the variants MacCullow and Cully are often used while the variants Culloo and Coloe are to be found in County Clare. This name and its variants were also brought into Ulster Province by settlers from Scotland during the seventeenth century.
The MacCullough coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.
