Origin of the Name Coogan

The Coogan family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of Coogan include Cogan, Gogan, Goggin, O'Coogan, Coggan, Cogavin, Keogan and Keohane. The first of the family to arrive in Ireland was the famous Milo de Cogan who arrived into Ireland with Strongbow in the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1172. He was granted huge estates in Cork by Henry II. He left no son as heir so the name was practically extinct by the seventeenth century but luckily enough minor branches under the name Goggin, and Gogan still survived. Another sept of the Ui Maine was anglicized Cogan and Coogan, while another small sept of County Leitrim became Cogan and Coogan also. In County Cavan Cogan and Keogan are synonyms.
